Lancers News · La Serna vs. Whittier HS

La Serna dominated once again winning Del Rio League at their final home meet against Whittier High School. it was no surprise to witness the talent that all the girls showed that day. what caught my eye was a single player named Lily Penner playing against another single player from Whittier High, her serves and her energy filled the game with excitement and anyone watching it was very impressed by her performance. The last game was a close call with players Savanna Schreiner and Emily Moreno going against another pair from Whittier High. The two ended up defeating their opponents by a thrilling and close game. The overall scores where La Serna: 15 and Whittier: 3, a job well done.

Multiple Teams · PLAYER INTERVIEW: JILL DE LEON

What was it like starting on varsity as a freshmen?

Starting on varsity as a freshman was a great honor and even better experience. It taught me so much as hard work, discipline and being a good supportive teammate through the good and the bad.

 Do you a pregame routine?

Before a game I always say a little prayer thanking God for  all the wonderful blessings in life.

How long have you played volleyball?

This is my fourth year of playing volleyball but I’ve always loved the sport.

What was one of your goals this season and did you achieve it?

For the season, the team’s goal was to grow and learn together and use our energy and skill as a team to achieve. This season we definitely surpassed our goal as a team and the result was winning league.

Is there a teammate or coach that helped you grow throughout the season ?

All my teammates and both my coaches helped me grow throughout the season. All of their support helped me perform my best.

What was your favorite memory of this year?

I have two favorite memories that tie for first. My first favorite memory was when we were playing Whittier @ home in a intense game that went to 5 and we had this amazing rally that  won us the game on a match point. This was my favorite game moment by far because it showed our teams hungriness to win and our chemistry on the court. My second favorite memory is when I accidentally fell during slow shuffles during practice because my friend Lourdes was laughing for a good 15 minutes.

What’s your favorite part about playing for La Serna?

My favorite part about playing for LS is playing with my friends and creating great memories with them.

 What position do you play?

I play outside/oppo hitter, and I’m working on playing more back-row, but I also set.

Do you plan on playing Volleyball in college?

Yes, I plan on playing  college ball, I would love to play for UCLA, Berkeley or the University of Minnesota in the future.

What do you look forward to next season?

I’m really excited for next year. I’m looking forward to being a hungry for success team & hopefully using  our energy and skill to go far in league and CIF.

1.How long have you been on the tennis team for?

1A. I’ve been on the La Serna tennis team for 3 years.

2.How would you describe your experience?

2A. It’s been a learning experience, I’ve been constantly challenged but have been able to grow as a player and a problem solver, so overall it’s been fun.

3.What would you say to new tennis players joining the team?

3A. I think new players should expect it’s a balance between working hard and having fun.

4.Would you say your team works well together?

4A. My whole team works well together, we all want each other to learn and play the best we possibly can. We have really good support, we stay and watch everyone play to the end.

5.How far do you think your team will go in league this year?

5A. I think our team has the ability to win league, we all work hard and put in a lot of effort at practice and games.

6.When you leave with the other seniors what words of advice do you leave for the remaining players?

6A. When I leave I want to tell the other girls to enjoy the experience and the time they have playing.

7A. My most memorable experience is probably the summer camps and the summer that I actually made the team. It was challenging to go to practice everyday in the heat but I enjoyed every minute. On the last day of camp it was nice to know all the work paid off and to see the other girls who would be my teammates, who I already got to know was also amazing.

8.Who would you recommend this sport to and why?

8A. I would recommend this sport to anyone who enjoys a challenge. Tennis is not a traditional team sport, we do all practice together and want each other to succeed but the great thing about tennis is that it’s how far you’re willing to push yourself.

9.When thinking about this team what word would you use to describe it?

9A. The one word I would use to describe my team is crazy.

10. If you would do anything different, What would you do and why?

10A. The one thing I would do different is probably work on building my relationships more with the other girls, this season I’ve already got closer to my team and it’s sad to think this is the end.
