Girls Junior Varsity Water Polo, Girls Varsity Water Polo · PLAYER INTERVIEW: NICOLETTE RAMIREZ

How long have you been playing?

I have been playing water polo for 6 years.

What are your goals for this season?

I really want to improve my all around skills and become a faster swimmer.

Which game are you looking forward to the most?

I love our Cal game, we get a better crowd and the rivalry is fun to play in.

What position do you play?

I am a set defender.

What skills are needed to play your position?

You really have to have the stamina to be able to hold your breath because a lot of times

you wrestle to get a front, and you have to have strong legs to try to push the person

you’re away from the goal.

How do you feel about this upcoming season?

I feel relieved because I know all of our hard work throughout practice and games will

pay off in the end.

How do you prepare for games?

I don’t really have any weird rituals, but the right songs get me in the right mood and I’m

ready to play.

How do you feel when your team wins?

I’m so excited, season is my favorite part of the school year and i hope this season is a

good one.

How do you feel about your teammates?

My teammates are great and are people I am glad to call my close friends.

What is your favorite part about playing with your team?

I love my teammates, being able to sing and laugh at practice is a great feeling.

How is this year’s season different from the last?

Every season is different, every year we have new players, new teams to face and new

things to work  on. This year will be especially tough for us as divisions got moved

around so we will be facing teams we don’t know much about.

Why did you start playing this sport/ Who influenced you to play?

My PE coach in 7th grade told me about water polo because he knew I was a swimmer

and I hated it. I started playing at the nearest club and I fell in love with the sport

Do you plan to play this sport after high school?

Yes, playing in college would be a dream.

What college would you like to attend?

I would love to attend UC Berkeley, it is a beautiful campus and they have access to

UCSF Medical School.

Do you think you would play the same position in college if you choose to advance to the next level?

Yes, I would not change my position unless I absolutely had to. Set defender is my

favorite position.
